Illustrator

Zoran Popovici

The course we propose covers the theoretical introductory notions, wrapped up as practical exercises – logo design and flyer layout design, aimed to bring you to an intermediate level in regards to Illustrator knowledge.

  • Introduction in programme interface.
  • Notions regarding lines and shapes in Illustrator.
  • We start designing a logo.

  • Color, shapes and their interactions.
  • Layers.
  • We finish the drawing of a vectorial logo.

  • Layout, art boards, grid, external content, text.
  • Plotting.

  • We will work on the structure of a flyer.

Data Visualization

Andra Croitoriu & Răzvan Zamfira

Data visualization and information design are innovative tools that transformed modern design, journalism, social sciences and architecture in recent years. Through the visual exploration of data we can discover and communicate new things regarding society, the urban environment and even ourselves. We will go through the entire process of designing a visual story by combining theory, practice as well as and inspiring examples.

Data Visualisation - a new language for visual communication

  • What is data visualisation?
  • Visualising information. A brief history.
  • Data visualization and contemporary design
  • What will you learn during this course?

Understanding your audience, defining the research question and exploring the data

  • Types of audiences
  • How to structure a research question
  • How/ where can we find & collect data?
  • Your personal data visualization project. Choosing a subject, asking (the right) questions and collecting data.
  • What lies hidden in your data? (basics statistics)
  • How to work in Google Sheets

Visual vocabulary

  • Visually coding the information
  • How to choose the right colours, icons and fonts
  • Types of charts
  • Examples of great data driven stories
  • Storyboards - How to structure your visual data story

Data Visualization Tools

  • Sketching with pen and paper
  • How to use online tools to turn numbers into visual content

Personal data stories

  • Each participant will have the opportunity to present his own data visualization project. (optional)
  • Books, podcasts and other cool places where you can learn about data visualization

Archicad vs Autocad

Zoran Popovici

The new kid on the block of BIM vs the old dog of CAD.
The class explores the advantages of using each of the proposed software in a comparative way.

  • 2D drawing in Autocad – why and how we draw a 2D project.

  • How a 2D graph becomes a 3D schematic model – in Autocad as well, because even though it does not seem like it, 3D modelling is accessible in this programme.

  • Archicad – what does BIM mean and is it helpful?

  • Complex shapes in Archicad and how we can visualize and export the 3D drawing from Archicad.

The third edition of The Challenge Academy, „Architecture, design & summer talks” took place between March 15 and May 1, 2021 and consisted of a series of courses structured on the steps of an architecture competition. From how we start a project, to how we represent it and how we communicate its story, the steps we go through when working on a contest (or school project) were the basis for organizing the theoretical courses of the third edition. Therefore, we went through brainstorming exercises, a comparative course of Archicad / Autocad, graphic representation and logo design in Illustrator and we ended with a data visualization course, useful for anyone who wants to tell meaningful stories in powerful graphics and schemes.

The practical part of the program – the studio – consisted in forming teams to participate in a selection of architecture competitions under the coordination of six international offices that joined the project:  CIRCOLO-A (Genoa), Corpo Atelier (Faro), CAN Architects (Győr), DRAFTWORKS * architects (Nicosia), Diana Dinu (London), Architects for Urbanity (Rotterdam). We were therefore beginning to lay the foundations for a long-term collaboration between architecture offices and passionate students, operating on the border between education and early understanding of the architectural profession in the current context. We wish to explore the limits we can operate on, in order to practice our profession in a meaningful way and contribute to solving current problems – and we believe that this can only be done in collaboration with specialists in the field and outside it.

The program ended with a summer school, in August of the same year, in a natural setting, through which we aimed to draw conclusions from what we had learned, to present our projects and competitions results, to get to know each other, to tell stories and, why not, to plan the next editions together.
